Taking the Gospel to Scotland’s virgin territory
It’s been 30 years since Luis, the grandson of a Scotsman, last brought the message of the Gospel to Scottish shores.
For much of June, Luis, his son Andrew, and teams of evangelists from more than a hundred Highland churches of all denominations have been reaching out to the region through a combination of preaching, music, skateboarding, sports and good old fashioned fun. What’s struck Luis in the last few weeks is just how much Scotland has changed.
“There was still a lot of spiritual interest back then and even those who didn’t go to church were open and the response was fabulous,” he says, recalling his 1979 to 1981 Glasgow Crusade. “But in one generation you can definitely sense the secularisation and lack of church attendance. I have asked young people ‘do you go to church?’ and they look at me like I’m crazy. So it’s been sudden, most sudden.”

Argentinian preacher is in Inverness to spread the word
evangelist says four-day festival will be ‘more fun than Rockness’
A Highland festival starting tomorrow will be “more fun than RockNess,” according to its star performer who has reputedly played to worldwide audiences of more than a billion people.
Argentinian preacher Luis Palau spoke yesterday of his “homecoming” to a region whose missionaries introduced him to Christianity and to an area he first visited 30 years ago.
The 74-year-old grandson of Scot Robert Balfour was speaking on his arrival in Inverness on the latest leg of a global mission to spread the gospel.
The evangelist is headlining a four-day festival featuring a programme of music and family events at the city’s Eden Court and Bught Park which is expected to attract 10,000 people.
Acknowledging last weekend’s RockNess event, he said the next four days would be “more fun, for sure”.
Scotland’s Highlands to be Reached through World Evangelist Luis Palau’s Highland Festival Campaign, includes nearly 50 evangelistic events over two weeks
More than 100 churches have come together to partner with world evangelist Luis Palau for a far-reaching campaign with the goal of winning Scotland back to Jesus Christ.
According to a media release, more than half the region’s churches are involved, representing most denominations.
The Highland Festival with Luis Palau is anticipated to be the largest and most significant outreach since the Highland Revivals in the 1940s and 50s.
In an otherwise declining spiritual climate, an excitement is burning today in Scotland due to the upcoming Festival, the news release says.
“I have a tremendous love for Scotland,” said Palau. “My family in Argentina became Christians back in the 1940s through the witness of missionaries from this area. Today, it is an honor for me to partner with the churches and believers there.”
The mission spans two weeks and includes nearly 50 events that will culminate in Inverness.
