Scottish Christian Party call in police
Police have been called in to investigate the theft and vandalism of political posters put on lampposts in Glasgow by the Scottish Christian Party in the run up to the Holyrood elections.
The Scottish Christian Party has placed thousands of posters featuring Bible texts on lampposts in Scotland’s largest city. However, some posters have been systematically removed or had their cable ties cut so that they flap in the wind.
Scottish Christian Party leader, Rev George Hargreaves, has written a letter to Sir William Rae, the Chief Constable of Glasgow, asking for police protection for the party’s posters.
The letter states: “I would be grateful if beat officers, whilst not being distracted from other duties, would exercise particular vigilance to prevent further interference in the democratic process by way of the theft and vandalism of election posters.”
In Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, where ‘persons unknown’ removed every poster, shopkeepers have also received a letter from Rev Hargreaves asking for vigilance. The party’s poster restoration teams have replaced all the Buchanan Street posters and now patrol sites nightly to replace and repair posters where necessary.
The lamppost campaign has been run like a military operation and has involved over a hundred volunteers from churches throughout Glasgow. It is the first phase of a £80k campaign to win a regional list seat in Glasgow, and will be backed up by a citywide billboard campaign commencing on 9 April.
Rev Hargreaves, who tops the Glasgow list commented, “We are still under the political radar, which is precisely where one needs to be prior to a ‘shock and awe’ stealth attack. Watch this space. We’ve only just begun.
