Lies, d..n lies and media headlines

In a society which is driven by news headlines, we are being fed a diet of media distortion which is taking us back into the Germany of the 1930s.

  • "If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.?"    Mark Twain
  • "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."   George Orwell
  • "The truth is rarely pure and never simple."  Oscar Wilde
  • "The history of our race, and each individual's experience, are sown thick with evidence that a truth is not hard to kill and that a lie told well is immortal."   Mark Twain
  • "Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them 'pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened."  Sir Winston Churchill
In his prize-winning book entitled 'From Beirut to Jerusalem', Thomas Friedman, the American journalist and former Middle East Bureau Chief  for the New York Times, recounts a meeting in the mid 80s with a top official of the PLO. When ushered into the latter's office, Friedman discovered that the militiaman had a copy of every news piece that Friedman had sent back to his head office in America. Though the message to the journalist was implicit it was also very powerful: "Ensure you report in our favour if you want to keep in touch with the news and stay healthy."

Palestinians and media
"Did you catch my spontaneous action; or do you need me to run it for you again?"

Journalists, news publishers and broadcasters are obliged – either by intimidation or the prospect of being 'cut off' from their sources – to report what the well-honed Palestinian media operatives want the world to see and hear. This is not such a huge problem if alternative news reports are also available: but they are not. And the great danger, in a frenzied world of information overload, is that opinion is formed by headlines and pictures from a single source and perspective.

As one Middle East journalist remarked:

"The natural tendency of the media is to gravitate toward the sources that are most obvious and available. Tyrants and terrorists like Saddam Hussein, Slobodan Milosevic, and Osama Bin Laden learned to welcome reporters - to stage media events, some of them horrific in nature. The possibilities available to them for distortion, manipulation, and disinformation are growing."

The power of control over the media has been evidenced when the occasional piece of news has 'slipped out' through the censoring filter - the lynching of two Israeli soldiers in 2000, and the pictures of Palestinians dancing in the streets when the Twin Towers fell in 2001. How quickly - having once been flashed across our screens - did these reports and pictures disappeared. The media fell into line.
Regarding the lynching event on 19/10/00, an Italian reporter released a film of  the two Jewish reserve soldiers who took a wrong turn into Ramallah and were savagely murdered, then thrown out of a first-floor window and mutilated by the mob, with the Palestinian Police looking on.
The TV station was threatened by Arafat's team so the media boss wrote a letter of apology, disclaiming credit and blaming others. Films shot by other film crews were confiscated at the point of a gun by Arafat's media-wise terrorists who were on the spot to insure such footage did not reach the public.

With persistent drip-drip effect of media bias, we are now in a situation in the West which is similar to that pertaining in Germany in the early 1930s.

Gaza Protest3

Athough there have been many public displays of support for Israel (which are very seldom reported), there has been widespread protests against Israel's attacks on the Gaza terrorist groups. (And of course fighting a guerilla war amongst a civilian population who are being used as human shields, will, inevitably and very sadly, result in civilian casualties).

The Jews are once again being demonised by the media, and there are now strong indications that the churches - at a corporate level - are rapidly becoming part of the establishment chorus of anti-semitism.

Britain’s surrender

Wall Street Journal (Europe), 20 January 2009

In Britain, the war in Gaza has revealed the extent to which the media, intelligentsia and political class have simply crumbled in the face of the global jihad.

The U.K. is a major player in European and world politics and is America’s most significant strategic ally. Until now, it has been considered one of Israel’s firm supporters and a linchpin of the Western defense against the world-wide Islamist onslaught. With the reaction to Gaza, however, that reputation is no longer sustainable.

Years of demonizing Israel and appeasing Islamist extremism within Britain have now coalesced, as a result of the media misrepresentation of the Gaza war as an atrocity against civilians, in an unprecedented wave of hatred against Israel and a sharp rise in attacks on British Jews.

Throughout the war, London’s streets have witnessed a hallucinatory level of violent and explicit support for Hamas from Muslims, members of the far left and supposedly progressive individuals.

Night after night, Israel’s embassy in well-to-do Kensington found itself under violent siege. Demonstrators attempted to storm the building, howling their support for the terrorist body whose genocidal intentions toward Israel and the Jews necessarily includes killing every one of the occupants inside.

Certainly, there have been anti-Israel protests around the world. But in Britain, not only have these been particularly violent but the authorities have done nothing to stop such incitement of hatred.

An interesting BBC interview with a British Army Colonel.

The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity has said:
Here in the UK, the social impact of the unfolding crisis in Gaza has been intense. Last weekend saw clashes between pro and anti-Israeli demonstrators. The Community Security Trust says there have been more than 150 anti-Semitic incidents reported in the UK since December 27, including an arson attack on a London synagogue. Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne claims that ‘the Israeli invasion of Gaza is being used as a pretext for threats against the Jewish community in Britain.’

Interestingly, the theme of anti-Semitism is prominent in a number of current films: Defiance attempts to rewrite the ‘weak victim’ cliché of Jews under the Nazi occupation, whilst The Reader deals with refusal to speak out against the atrocity. And on the small screen, the BBC is presenting viewers with a new adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank. All this in the run-up to Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27), an event designed to address the fact that, as a nation, we have repeatedly ignored the plight of persecuted people groups in our own backyard. Indeed, it was partly in response to the atrocities of the Holocaust that the modern agenda was set for the re-establishment of a Jewish state.

Video evidence now leaves no doubt that countless children in the Gaza Strip are being abused and exploited by radical Muslims associated with Hamas.

Children as young as one year old dressed in suicide belts and paraded about; kindergarten children being taught to kill; children being used as human shields to protect terrorists from opposing fire.

This exploitation of children violates the most basic of human rights, and such actions by adults perpetrated on children constitutes child abuse and cannot be justified.

ACT for America has lauched a petition calling on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to end the UN’s silence and initiate a thorough UN investigation into this abuse of children in the Gaza Strip, through UNICEF or related UN entity that would be the most appropriate for such an investigation.

I have just signed their petition, and I thought you would like to sign it as well. Please use the link below to read the petition and add your signature!

“Lying at the heart of the premise of the Arabs, with regard to the land of Israel, is their failure to see that Israel’s title to the land is grounded in the word of the Living God. Israel gained the land by the conquest of Canaan at the command of God, and enjoyed nine centuries of complete sovereignty over the land. In fact, Israel is the only land for which there is an impeccable title deed.

“The Arabs first made conquest of the land in the seventh century AD…

“Nor did the Israelites ever totally abandon the land of Abraham. There were 300,000 Jews living there in 1881.

“There is no greater falsehood in history than the claim the Arabs make that they are the legitimate heirs to the land of Israel.”

I am a believer in Jesus (Yeshua) living and ministering in Israel.

For 8 years the UN and for the most part the world’s Medias didn’t condemn Hamas for shooting rockets on a daily basis into our towns and villages. Where children were being killed and injured, having several times daily to run for bomb shelters in fear of their lives. The UN never called that a war crime or a crime against humanity.

You see there are two standards one for the rest of the world and one for the Jews. And as we watch anti-Semitism spiral out of control throughout Europe and around the world we will hear more and more the cry to destroy Israel and kill the Jews.

The people of the world are being brainwashed and slowing coming to the wrong conclusion that if somehow Israel would just disappear the threat of Islam would go away and everyone would live happy every after.

God has good news for Israel and that is to say that He chose the Jews as His people, and He will be their God and He will protect them, that He called them back to the Land He promised our forefathers as an ever lasting covenant.

The sovereignty of God cannot be questioned, His Word cannot be questioned and it is His Will that will be done. It makes no difference how many self appointed so-called Prophets say Israel will be destroyed; Israel will be here to see the Messiah Yeshua’s return. And God is not finished gathering His people the Jews back to this Land. And somehow, someway the two sticks will come together, there is changes in the air and each of us have one very important obligation and that is to be obedient to God’s calling on our lives.

We are praying here in Israel that the UN, EU and USA will not rebuild Hamas but help us build a peaceful society in Gaza that will realize that Hamas is their enemy as well.

But there is a greater Power and He has His plan and Israel plays a big part in that plan. For it’s God who is preparing this ministry to rescue Jews as they begin to flee out of Europe and other parts of the world. As limited as we are we will do all we can to fulfill God commission on us. God has put together this part of the Body of Messiah for the purpose of blessing the Apple of His Eye.

In a letter to his newspaper yesterday a reader commented on the current civil war in Libya.

He wondered whether the BBC is (as governments are) 'hedging its bets'.

To make his point the letter-writer observed that the BBC reporters were initially describing those standing up against Gaddafi's regime as 'protestors'; now (with the prospect of Gaddafi surviving) these 'protestors' are being described as 'rebels'.

It is this subtle nuanced use (and misuse) of langauge that infiltrates our minds and shapes our perceptions.

Call the mountains of Judea and Samaria 'West Bank occupied territories' for long enough, and that (in the public's eye) is how they come to view what God calls 'My land' (Ezek 20:40; Ezek 36:5; Joel 3:2).

It is this subtle nuanced use (and misuse) of langauge that infiltrates our minds and shapes our perceptions. Ed.

Of greater concern to me is the fact this same issue has arisen in Christian writings over the last quarter century. Words are chosen not to further illuminate a Scriptural point, or glorify God but to promote a theology, ministry, or just some crack pot heretical notion which makes money or celebrity for the author.

Much of the 'Christian,' pulp fiction I read twenty years ago whilst helping at a Christian Bookshop merited less credence than our own gutter press. Yet it sold in great numbers. Many of the writers, that's assuming the books weren't ghosted by professionals, have gone on to build ministries with household names. Ministries built on lies.

Just as Western people have been mislead and dumbed down by careful nuancing of language, so have Christians. The flock has been scattered. Lives ruined. And all because they believed a lie.

Regulation of so called 'Christian,' writing is both impossible and undesirable. Yet Acts 17:11 gives the way through this mess. Search the Scriptures to see if these things are so.

Unlike reading the press, Christians have an ultimate source of truth. We just need to use it.
